You are responsible.
This statement can be so scary! Seriously, I am responsible? Responsible
for what?!
You are responsible for everything you are and everything you become. Holy
shit that's scary!
The power in the statement above is the power of goal setting. No one else
is living your life. Only you! I dare you to take that on.
We find ourselves in a constant state of blaming everyone or everything else for our lives. A simple example that comes to mind is traffic. How often do you, or people you know use traffic as an excuse for their life not going as planned. "I am sorry I am late the traffic on the 405 was terrible!" Substitute the name of the freeway and there are few, if any who has not said or heard that in their life. Now, there is no doubt that traffic was terrible. Inherent in that statement is 'the traffic made me late'. The traffic did not make you late: Could you have left earlier? Could you have gone online and seen what the traffic conditions were? Could you have left early and gotten to your destination with time to spare just to make sure you were on time? The answer to each of these questions is yes. The minutia of things that contribute to traffic and you being late could go on and on. The concept is the traffic did not make you late. You had a choice. The choice is not always conducive to your life, but the choice exists all the same.
Taking responsibility is not about guilt or making yourself wrong. The
responsibility is power. Power for your life working. (Self-evaluation is
not self-flagellation.)
What you can start to realize is that once you start taking responsibility
for everything in your life, even those things that seem out of your
control, you can start to take action for those things you are committed to
changing. Maybe you don't really want to change it and that is fine but
knowing you have the choice makes all the difference.
"When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at
change." Wayne Dyer

That is such a profound statement by Dr. Dyer. We are so much a product of how we choose to look at things. It really isn't just a trite statement. I know that I can choose to influence my day by what I think as I start out.
ReplyDeleteI think one of the most important choices that we can make is to look at every person as if they have the best of intentions for us. It is difficult to listen to someone who consistently blames their situation on the fact that someone else just doesn't like them, has it in for them, doesn't care about them, etc. (Of course I let myself get caught up in that sometimes!) What I find most of the time is that people are so caught up in their heads with their own thoughts that they don't realize how they come across. Sometimes a friendly "How can I help you today" may be just what it takes to change attitudes on both sides.
Thanks for the thoughts Matt.
