The Basics - Where am I going?!

This blog is intended to give you a jumping point to start setting goals in your life.

Knowing where you are going allows you to live powerfully right now. In this moment you can make decisions as they relate to the goals and vision you have for your life years in the future.

The best place to start is create a vision for your life in ten years. Some people find this extremely challenging. There are some easy questions you can ask yourself to get your brain thinking this way. The more specific you can get the better. Certain answers will be extremely specific while others might be vague at this point. Try not to judge your answers just write the first thing that comes to mind.

In ten years my ideal home is.....
In ten years my ideal relationship is....
In ten years my ideal income is.....
In ten years my home is....
You can take this line of questioning to everything in your life. Where you live, your family, lifestyle, geography, etc.

You can also began to explore things you don't actually let yourself dream are possible. A great way is to ask yourself what you would do tomorrow if you won 25 million dollars in the lottery? Or what would you do if you knew you could not fail?

Once these start to take place in your mind. Sit down close your eyes and envision your perfect life in ten years. When you have a clear picture write it down. Peoples visions all look completely different.

Here are some examples.

*I have just arrived home from a work trip. I spent a few days aligning with my team of managers about growth and company culture. I arrive at home to my two story house which has been featured in two design magazines - complete with garden, front porch, swimming pool and spacious backyard. My spouse is there to greet me with our two children running up to hug me. I have one day to pack because we are taking a family vacation. We are meeting my parents, brothers and their families in Italy for a two week stay in a villa there. In Italy I am cuddled next to my family with a glass of wine in hand and life could not be better.

*My company is the top rated consulting firm in San Francisco.
I own a three story condo overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge.
I make $150,000 a year.
I travel to New York three times a year for pleasure.
I have participated in adventure sports on 4 continents.

These are two examples of 10 year visions. Play with it. Share your vision here as a comment or send it to goals2great@gmail.com and we will post it as a seperate blog.

goals- redefining what i want

i sat down with my good friend matt today and he helped me with some goal setting. i had written down some goals for the next few months: practice meditation every day, eat salad four times a week, make this much money by this time, and he challenged me to think differently about the way i was setting my goals. rather than doing something to achieve the goal, why don’t i set my goal around the way i want to feel. (i.e. i meditate every day to achieve balance and confidence, and be more creative.

it’s so easy to let a goal fly out the window. i mean just look at our 40 day yoga challenge. while it was very rewarding, the thought of practicing every day became a burden at times rather than something i was doing to just feel better.

think of how you want to feel in ten years when you’ve achieved that laundry list of goals. think of who you want to be. and then be that person now.

i am joyful, creative, grounded, successful, loving, and laid back.

today.

because i said so.

You might not get there

If you don't know where you're going, you might not get there. - Yogi Berra

When starting with goal setting I was being helped with my goals by someone. She took a look at them and said "This is bullshit!" I remember being taken aback at first. She went on to explain that I was writing things down that I thought others wanted for me or things that I thought would make me look good. When I got what she was really saying to me, I was extremely grateful and inspired. So rarely does someone you have just met care enough about your life to be that honest with you. This was the beginning of my goal setting days. Fast forward to the present, two years later, and I have just written some goals that truly inspire me. I wrote them for myself.

This journey of figuring out where your going and what you want is a tough one. You're fighting the word 'no' and the belief that the world is not really full of that many possibilities. What I am here to tell you is that the world is full of them. It's gonna take hard work and it is not always going to be easy but the work is worth it.
